The Impact of GDPR on Job Seekers and Why You Should Opt-In

The big day is looming…the long awaited General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is due to come into force this coming Friday. Replacing the somewhat outdated Data Protection Act 1998 (the internet has come quite far over the last 20 years), the impending changes to legislation brings with it strict new rules around how businesses handle and process EU and UK consumer data across the world; the main focus being on protecting people, not data.

Preparing for these new rules has caused an abundance of headaches to business owners, and those employees who have the (not so) pleasure of wrapping their heads around the GDPR maze. With the aim of ensuring the safe management of personal data, businesses will be far more accountable for how they manage the data they collect and hold, creating a need for many to develop new procedures and policies to increase security and avoid falling foul of the law. For those of you who have been lucky enough to dodge dealing with GDPR from a business perspective, I’m almost certain your inbox will have been inundated with an influx of GDPR related Opt-In emails as a result of businesses starting to take the necessary steps to get GDPR compliant.

If you are anything like me, going through emails is pretty low on the priority list (outside of work that is), but unless you want to be cut off from the world, now is definitely a good time to start changing that. Taking the necessary actions to opt in or give your consent is crucial if you want to continue receiving updates.

So why should you give recruitment agencies your consent? Well if you are actively job hunting, I think the answer to that question is obvious. However, if you are currently settled in a job role, you may still want to consider giving your consent. Studies show that up to 84 percent of candidates would consider leaving their current company for the right job. By giving your consent, you are giving yourself the best chance of not missing out on that amazing opportunity. And once you are finally in that dream role you thought you’d never find, you can make use of the new GDPR rule which gives you the power to request to see all the information we hold about you and ask for that information to be deleted.
